Diggin' up Duggers

So far I am inclined to believe that our Duggers came from Virginia, to what is now Carter County, TN, then to Sumner County within a few years after 1800. The first person I can link us to is a James Dugger, who came to Giles County from Davidson County in 1811. He settled on some land on Leatherwood Creek. He is probably the father of the James I have listed above, but that would be a shear guess. The early tax records only list one James Dugger, but in 1820 there were 2 James Duggers, both at least 45 years old. In 1824 one of the James bought 50 acres on Leatherwood Creek, and in 1827 another 119 acres on Indian Creek. This could have been the same James, or two different James Duggers. The younger James moved to Wayne County before 1830. The elder James (about 70-75 now) stayed in Giles County.

James Jr. died before 1830. His widow was Essannah Dugger, also known as Anna. James and Anna only had 1 male, Joacum, and 1 female, (Mary?) that came with them to Wayne County. Posibbly there were other females who had already been married off before then. The family settled near our Jackson ancestors, near 48 Mile Creek, on Long Hollow Branch. Joacum married sometime around 1835, and had 2 female children. His first wife is unknown. Apparently his wife and 2 girls died between 1840 and 1845. He remarries Susannah Creecy around 1846, and they begin the family that continues our line through their son, John. (The Creecy family was in Giles County with James also)

As stated in the Jackson Family page, Andrew Jackson and joacum were neighbors of sorts. They served on juries togather many times. On Sept. 4, 1848, the Court of Wayne County appointed Joacum as guardian of William, Melinda, and Sarah Ann Crossno, orphans of George Crossno. In January of 1850, he evidently reached another aggreement with the court that relievd him of his guardianship. (Possible that at least one, or more, of them became of age.) In 1852, Joacum is made administrator for the estate of Eli Merriman Senior. Eli's son, Eli Jr. can be found in the story of Andrew Jackson on the Jackson page.

At this time I don't have abny information about what happened to the Duggers during the Civil War years. Joacum was far too old to serve, and his sons were young. Only James, (picture below) his oldest boy, would have had a chance to enlist.

In 1874, Susan, Joacum's wife, died. She is buried in Walnut Grove Cemetery. John Dugger, my g-g-grandfather, married Susan E.

Hanes about 1877. To this union was born Emer, Ella, and George. George Dugger was my grandmother Shiela's father. He married Ora Jackson in Waynesboro, TN, in November of 1913. Ora was widowed with 2 previous children.
